DIY Rabbit Playground with Castles, a Tunnel & Window Platforms
Imagine looking across your room and seeing your bunnies exploring a wooden castle, disappearing into a tunnel, and settling into a cozy resting spot you built just for them. A DIY rabbit playground can become a personal part of your home—a place designed around your available space and the animals you love.
This design began with Claire and her rabbits, Boomer, Tigger, and Peanut. Together, we developed a playground combining two stacked castle towers, a connecting tunnel, stairs, ramps, a removable sleepy area, and platforms beside the windows. The same design is now available as a downloadable woodworking plan.
This article explains the materials and main build phases so you can decide whether the project suits your room and woodworking experience. The full PDF provides the measured cut lists, cutting layouts, assembly diagrams, and installation instructions.
Materials for This Rabbit Playground
The shopping list in Claire’s plan includes the following lumber. All boards and strips listed below are 6 feet long; the plywood is a separate panel.
| Material | Length or panel size | Quantity | Main use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pine strips, ½ × 1½ inches | 6 ft | 8 | Railings and smaller details |
| 1×3 boards | 6 ft | 3 | Sleepy-area frame and braces |
| 1×6 boards | 6 ft | 2 | Platform and resting-area components |
| 1×12 boards | 6 ft | 12 | Castle walls, tunnel, stairs, platforms, and ramps |
| 2×4 boards | 6 ft | 3 | Corner-platform frame and support leg |
| ½-inch plywood | 4 × 4 ft | 1 panel | Castle tops |
The plan also lists 1½-inch and 2½-inch wood screws, wood glue, wall anchors, and four wall brackets measuring 8–12 inches. Select fixings for your wall construction and the installation they must support; the bracket dimensions alone do not establish their load capacity.
This is a room-installed design. Its upper platforms require wall attachments, so check that you can drill and install appropriate supports before choosing it. Measure your window positions, available wall space, and cleaning access against the plan before buying materials.
Tools You’ll Need
- Circular saw or miter saw for board cuts
- Drill, drill bits, and screwdriver bits
- Measuring tape and pencil
- Speed square
- Sander or sanding block
- Level for installation
- Jigsaw or another suitable tool for the shaped doorways and peek-holes
- Clamps to help hold parts during assembly
The PDF’s shopping list names the basic cutting and assembly tools. A tool for shaped openings is an additional practical requirement: a miter saw alone will not make the castle doorways or circular tunnel openings.
How the Bunny Playground Comes Together
The PDF divides the project into three main sections: stairs and the lower platform, castles and tunnel, and upper platforms. Build the individual components first, then follow the room-installation sequence.
1. Build the Stairs and Lower Platform
Start with the stair components and down-left platform. Check the assemblies for square before fastening, and keep the parts labelled as you work.
The design leaves an open area beneath the stairs for an optional litter box. Check the size and removal path of your own tray before positioning the finished assembly.
2. Assemble the Castle Boxes
Build the castle boxes and fit their tops. Each end tower consists of two stacked boxes, giving the playground two castle towers made from four boxes in total.
The plan instructs you to mark and cut the access doors after assembling each box. It also asks you to size the openings around your rabbits. Review the opening locations and cutting method before fastening, and sand every cut edge thoroughly.
Secure the stacked boxes as described in the plan so they cannot shift independently.
3. Build the Connecting Tunnel
Assemble the tunnel from its three main panels. It links the lower castle sections and includes peek-holes along its front face.
Check that the entrances align with the castles and that you can reach inside for cleaning. Leave final placement adjustments until the other connecting components are ready.
4. Assemble the Removable Sleepy Area
Build the resting-area frame, add the bottom boards, and fit the braces. This is a separate piece that can be repositioned or removed; in the illustrated layout, it sits above the tunnel between the upper castle sections.
That separate construction makes it easier to lift out for cleaning. Any cushion you add should be removable, and its suitability depends on whether your rabbits chew fabric or filling.
5. Build and Install the Upper Platforms
Assemble the corner-platform frame and its support leg. During room installation, fit the corner platform first, then the platforms beside the two windows.
The PDF allows adjustment of the Window 1 platform’s height. The Window 2 platform must align with the corner platform. These are different instructions—raising or lowering every platform independently would change the connecting layout.
Use the wall brackets and appropriate fixings described in the installation section. Check the levels and connections before continuing.
6. Connect the Castles, Stairs, and Ramps
Position the castles and tunnel, connect the lower platform to the left castle, and install the ramps between the lower, corner, and window platforms. Fit the smaller ramps at the lower castle entrances.
Secure the connections rather than leaving the ramps loose. The PDF also suggests small wooden strips across the ramps for grip.
7. Fit the Guard Rails and Finish the Setup
Install the fences and guard rails after the platforms, ramps, and castles are in place. This lets you fit them around the completed layout instead of guessing their positions earlier.
Finish by checking for movement, exposed screw points, splinters, and inaccessible cleaning spots. Guard rails are part of the design, but the playground is not an escape-proof enclosure. Assess the layout for your rabbits before introducing them, and supervise their initial use.
Cost Comparison: Build It Yourself or Buy Ready-Made?
For a project this size, compare the complete setup rather than the price of a single rabbit hideout.
| Option | What to include in your comparison |
|---|---|
| Build Claire’s playground | Lumber, plywood, screws, glue, brackets, anchors, sanding supplies, the PDF, and any tools you need |
| Buy separate ready-made pieces | Two comparable castle towers, a tunnel, ramps, a resting area, platforms, and any delivery or installation costs |
| Commission a custom build | Materials, fabrication, room fitting, installation, and delivery |
The twelve 1×12 boards are likely to be a major part of the DIY budget. Price the actual shopping list locally before assuming that building will be cheaper. Reusing suitable materials and tools you already own can reduce your outlay, while higher-grade lumber and new tool purchases can increase it.
There is no verified like-for-like retail quote for this complete design, so a fixed savings claim would be misleading. The practical benefit of the DIY route is that you build the linked setup from one coordinated plan and can discuss room-specific changes before cutting.
