DIY wooden Christmas truck plan with dimensions, front and side view

DIY Christmas Truck: Build a Festive Wooden Holiday Pickup

There's something about a little red truck loaded with wrapped presents that instantly says "the holidays are here." This build gives you exactly that — a wooden pickup truck with a slatted bed perfect for stacking gifts, evergreen branches, or ornaments, plus a boxy cab that comes together with simple, repeatable cuts. Paint it up as a holiday display piece for your porch or mantel, or add wheels and let it double as a sturdy push toy for the kids. Either way, it's a project that earns its spot as a centerpiece the moment the lights go up.

Christmas truck bed slats and chassis

How to Build It: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Build the Bed Box Sides

Attach a bed corner post to each end of a stack of bed short slats to form the two end walls of the truck bed. Repeat to make both sides. Always check for square with a speed square before fastening, and use wood glue along with screws at every joint for added strength.

Step 2: Assemble the Bed Box

Join the two end walls together using the bed long slats to form the full rectangular bed box.

Step 3: Install the Chassis Slats

Attach the chassis slats across the top of the bed box, spacing them evenly (about 0.5" apart) with a slight overhang on the sides. This forms the floor the rest of the truck sits on.

Step 4: Install the Chassis Brace

Add the chassis braces underneath, spaced according to the plan (4.75", 11.5", and 9.5" apart). These braces give the truck bed the strength to hold its shape and support weight.

Step 5: Install the Cab Corner

Attach the first set of cab corner posts to the front of the chassis to start building up the cab structure.

Step 6: Install the Cab Side Slat

Add the cab side slats between the corner posts to begin forming the sides of the cab.

Step 7: Install the Cab Front Slat

Attach the first cab front slat, which becomes the lower front panel of the cab.

Step 8: Install the Second Cab Front Slat

Add the second cab front slat above the first to build up the cab's front face and create the hood ledge.

Step 9: Install the Cab Corner

Add the second set of cab corner posts to support the roof.

Step 10: Install the Cab Roof Slat

Cap the cab with the roof slat, completing the boxy cab silhouette.

Step 11: Install the Chassis Brace and Wheels

Add the remaining chassis braces and mount the four wheels to the chassis. Pre-drill your holes, use lag screws with washers, and double check the load rating if the truck will be pushed around by kids.

Step 12: Final Touches

This is where the truck gets its holiday personality:

  • Paint for a holiday vibe: prime first, then finish in classic red with deep green and warm gold accents — white stripes or number plates add contrast and read well at a distance.
  • Add rolling wheels for kids: mount plate casters or wooden wheels to the chassis brace, with locking casters if you want it to stay put as a display.
  • Front lamps that glow: surface-mount battery puck lights or mini LEDs as headlights for a wire-free glow-up.

Cost Comparison: DIY vs. Store-Bought

A decorative wooden holiday truck like this typically sells for $80–$180+ at holiday retailers and specialty toy shops.
