How to Build a DIY Outdoor Planter Box – Simple Project for Beginners
Share
Looking to add a functional and stylish planter to your porch, patio, or backyard? This DIY planter box is the perfect weekend woodworking project — even if you're a beginner.
It uses standard 1x4 lumber, simple joinery, and basic tools — no advanced skills required. Whether you're planting herbs, flowers, or vegetables, this raised box will make your space look great and grow beautifully.

🔧 What You’ll Need:
1x4 lumber (or polywood, depending on your preference)
Drill and exterior screws
Measuring tape
Saw (circular or miter)
Optional: wood glue, wood sealer, or landscape fabric
🛠 Step-by-Step Overview:
1. Cut Your Parts
Use the provided measurements to cut slats and side supports for your chosen size (small, medium, or large).
2. Build the Panels
Attach the side slats to corner posts to form four box panels. You can optionally glue the joints for extra strength.
3. Assemble the Box
Screw all four sides together. Check that the corners are square and level as you go.
4. Add the Base Slats
Lay down slats on the bottom with small gaps between them for water drainage. You can also use a polywood sheet if preferred.
5. Finish It
Lightly sand all edges and apply exterior stain or sealer to extend the life of the planter. You can also line the inside with landscape fabric before filling.
